Music

Music offers a unique contribution to the overall development of the child. It is a powerful and unique form of communication that can change the way children feel, think and act. It brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. All children have the ability to achieve musically.

Skills will be built on yearly, with children having the opportunity to try a variety of instruments and genres.  Children will develop their knowledge of musical terms and notation, and ability to rehearse, compose, improvise and perform confidently.

Children should enjoy music and experience personal and social development as well as musical development.

Our intent is to ensure that pupils:

1.Develop Musical Knowledge and Skills: Build a secure understanding of musical elements, including pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, and structure, through progressive and practical activities.
2.Experience a Broad and Balanced Curriculum: Explore a wide repertoire of musical styles, traditions, and genres, including classical, folk, world music, and contemporary compositions.
3.Become Confident Musicians: Develop their performance skills through singing, playing instruments, and ensemble work, fostering confidence and enjoyment in making music.
4.Compose and Create: Learn to improvise and compose music, expressing their own ideas and emotions through sound.
5.Listen and Appraise: Cultivate their ability to listen to and evaluate music critically, reflecting on their own and others’ work.
6.Celebrate Diversity: Appreciate music from different times, places, and cultures, broadening their understanding of the world and encouraging respect for diversity.

The Charanga Model Music Curriculum (MMC) is an innovative and comprehensive framework designed to support high-quality music education in schools. Rooted in the National Curriculum for Music in England, it provides a structured yet flexible approach to teaching music, ensuring progression, engagement, and inclusivity across all key stages.

This curriculum emphasises the development of core musical skills—listening, performing, composing, and appraising— while fostering creativity and a lifelong appreciation of music. It is built around accessible resources and activities that cater to diverse learning needs and abilities, making music education both enjoyable and meaningful for all pupils.

We also offer many musical opportunities outside the regular lessons such as our participation in workshops and performances such as Young Voices. More details about our Music provision can be found in our Music at Woodlea document which you can access below.
