Academic Success
Aim 1: Enable individual academic success
Teaching and Learning
At Woodlea Primary School, enabling individual academic success, developing creative skills through broad learning experiences, and fostering an emotional understanding of ourselves and others is at the heart of everything we do to ensure our children ready for life.
Underpinning everything we do is the belief that building positive relationships is the aspect that has the most impact on learning. “Every interaction, is an intervention” and positive interactions have the most impact. This must not be forgotten amongst the varying demands of school life. All staff at Woodlea, care about the children and take time out to learn about the children as individuals. We also believe that all staff should be continual learners themselves. Enthusiastic teachers inspire learners.
Within the Woodlea family, we give each of our aims equal weighting within a knowledge-rich curriculum, through engaging teaching, within great working relationships. We work hard to ensure that Woodlea Primary is the best possible primary school experience for every child. We also want all children to come to a school like ours, so we look outwards to include other schools in our journey where possible.
We want all children at Woodlea to be willing and able to:
- Be curious -young children are naturally curious and have wonderful imaginations. We want to ensure they continue to be curious. We encourage them to ask questions, seek further knowledge and want to find out more. We encourage them to be active learners who participate fully in their learning because they are keen and interested.
- Be resilient - we know that resilient learners are able to overcome challenges, both immediate ones and ones in future life. It is important that children meet challenges but are supported to develop resilience. This is not just about learning, but also for social interactions. Emotional resilience is a vital component of successful learners.
- Be caring - to care about themselves, others and the environment. To care about their learning, take pride in what they do and achieve. To care about others and know they are part of a local and global community where we have responsibility towards others and that our actions impact others.
- Be respectful - respect themselves, others and their environment. We want them to understand and value different points of view and beliefs. To learn how to discuss challenging issues in a respectful way. We want them to show respect for our school on a daily basis, both in the classroom and around school.
- Be reflective - we want them to reflect on their successes and also their marvellous mistakes. When we reflect on our learning and think about how we learn best, we are better able to be life-long independent learners.
- Be ambitious - to challenge themselves in every aspect. To always try their best.
All these elements underpin everything we do at Woodlea, all day, every day. They apply equally to all members of our school community of learners.
