Tier 1

Most children thrive with our ‘Tier 1’ core provision. Every child benefits from weekly whole class teaching and for this, we use a mix of approaches, which are based on a strong evidential base, and these include SCARF, Zones of Regulation, and Emotional Literacy.

At the core of each of these approaches is the importance of giving children an emotional vocabulary, the time and space to listen and reflect on how they feel and a set of tools to help them move to a more positive set of feelings when sadness, frustration, anger, loneliness, grief are experienced.

SCARF (PSHE)

Coram Life Education is a leading provider of relationships, health, wellbeing, and drugs education. They provide SCARF, teaching resources, which we use as a part of our aim to help all children to foster an emotional understanding of themselves and others. SCARF is a whole-school approach to promoting behaviour, safety, achievement and wellbeing and offers us a progressive framework for in our PSHE lessons (including RSE) and our assemblies.

SCARF (which stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship) provides a whole-school approach to help us teach children about these essential elements – all of which play a key role in preparing children to achieve their best, academically and socially, getting them Ready for Life.

SCARF is closely aligned with the DfE requirements for statutory Relationships and Health Education, and mapped to the PSHE Association programmes of study. Staff at Woodlea use SCARF as a framework to provide resources to support their teaching.

Zones of Regulation

Woodlea has recently adopted a Zones of Regulation approach when supporting children to self-regulate and learn about their own and others emotions. Leaning about our emotions, how to recognise, label and then learn to regulate them can be very challenging.

Using this visual support system has proven to have a positive impact on pupils understanding and ability to communicate emotions appropriately.

Emotional Literacy

Our emotional literacy curriculum was developed by the Woodlea team based on the Zones of Regulaton framework. We have considered which emotions our children should understand in their time with us at Woodlea to help them express how they are feeling.

Sometimes, this core approach isn’t enough for a child and they need support in a smaller group focusing on a specific set of skills. You can find out more about our Tier 2 support here.
